BENEFITS OF PHONICS
Helps children learn to read by breaking down words into sounds
Helps children build letter and word recognition
Enables children to blend and dissect words, while improving spelling and pronunciation
Builds child's confidence, to speak up more often and improve reading fluency
Gives children motivation and feeling of success again and again, especially when reading gets tougher
WHAT WE DO IN CLASS
The phonics program is split into 10 class packages. Each package will go through the following topics:
1) Alphabet
Children will learn letter-sound relationships in these 10 lessons because English uses letters in the alphabet to represent sounds. Phonics teaches this information to help children learn how to read.
2) Short Vowels
The 26 letters of the English alphabet are divided into two groups: consonants and vowels.
These 10 lessons will focus on the 5 short vowels: a, e, i, o, and u. The classes will also introduce LONG VOWELS, when the sound matches the name of the letter (e.g. the "a" in cake). This is in contrast to SHORT VOWELS, like the "a" in can.
3) Letter Combinations & Diphthongs
These 10 lessons will focus on identifying and blending different letter sounds and letter combinations together to make words. Written English is complex because there are only a handful of letters that only represent one sound and there are several letters and letter combinations that can represent many different speech sounds.
4) Consonant Blends & Digraphs
The next 10 lessons focus on distinguishing between blends and digraphs.
Blends are two letters often found together where each maintain their own sound.
We can use Phonological Awareness activities such as blending to teach our students how to combine two sounds.
For example, /s/ + /t/ can slide into /ssssssssssst/ and eventually /st/.
Digraphs are two letters that combine together to create a new sound. Students learn to recognize TH as a unit that makes the sound /th/ like in “this”. "
5) Split Vowel Pairs
A split digraph contains two letters (a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e and u-e) but they are split between a consonant, for example amaze, rate and lake. In these 10 lessons, we work on familiarizing "a_e" words containing these split digraphs.
