At Chit Chat n' Play, we focus on process praise to foster a growth mindset.
We praise children based on effort and working hard when they succeed, as they will be more likely to try more challenging tasks that lead to learning and persist through difficult tasks.
Since we focus on the process, we emphasize the importance of asking for help or feedback, trying new learning strategies, and the steps that the child took to get the end result.
We use these examples of process praise to remind children that it takes consistent effort to do something well, even when they don't believe in their own abilities.
Parents may unknowingly be enforcing a fixed mindset, so we also work closely with parents to help foster a growth mindset culture outside of the classroom, as some parents might not realize the impact of their words of praise and reactions to failure.
By showing parents what a growth mindset is and how the words they are saying are negatively impacting their child and what to say instead to foster a growth mindset, parents will better be able to support the implementation of a growth mindset for their children.

At Chit Chat n’ Play, we support students in developing strong literacy foundational skills and a love of reading and learning. Once the strong foundation is set, the once "struggling" reader will improve in all areas including spelling, comprehension, writing, and grammar! Unlocking the English language for students will open a whole world of reading and writing, equipping them for learning and for life.
Our classes engage multiple senses to accommodate different learning styles.
Students will practice:
Grit
Problem-solving
Resilience
Trying new things
Managing emotions
Mindfulness
Gratitude
According to several studies, instilling a growth mindset in students can result in greater motivation to learn, greater investment of effort and better academic performance.
The concept of growth mindset has been around for a while. The idea was developed by Dr. Carol Dweck at Stanford University. Dr. Dweck has shown that children who had a growth mindset believed that the ability to learn is not fixed and it can change with effort.
Dr. Dweck has shown that when kids read and learn about the brain and how it changes and grows in response to challenge, they're much more likely to persevere when they fail, because they don't believe that failure is a permanent condition.
